On the 10th the pedestrianization of Vara de Rey and the Plaza del Parque begins. The first phase of the works is scheduled to conclude in April 2017
If you are going to travel by center of Ibiza you will have to be attentive to the cambios that the city council will start from the next Monday October 3. On the occasion of the beginning of the pedestrianization of Paseo de s'Alamera (Vara de Rey), the Park Square and Jaume I the October 10, the sense of circulation from some downtown roads switch to and access to certain areas will be limited.
The Consistory will present a Information campaign directed mainly to the neighbors of the zone so that they do not have problems in the access to their houses or establishments. The traffic reorganization will be carried out before the works start and will be maintained until at least the month of April, when the first phase is scheduled to end.
At the moment, it is known that access to the surroundings of s'Alamera will closed, except for residents. The first streets that will change their meaning will be the Ignacio Wallis Avenue (the section between Avenida España and the intersection of Bartolomé Rosselló with Isidoro Macabich) that will become one way to San Antonio, and Bartolomé Vicente Ramón (where Zara and the old exit of the cinema Serra are), that will give exit to the port.
All the works they will develop in two phases. The first will go from this month of October until April 2017 and the second will be held during the same period, just after the summer season. In this second plan will return to modify the direction of the tracks Ignacio Wallis and Bartolomé Rosselló, as well as that of the avenue Santa Eulalia, Isidoro Macabich and the street José Zorzona Bernabeu.
In order to reorganize the traffic, the guidelines of the study of the Cinesi company for the reorganization of the traffic of the City of Ibiza were followed, which advised to carry it out in two phases.
The controversy of parking
One of the drawbacks that have not been slow in highlighting the residents is the loss of parking spaces that will occur.
It is expected that about 200 will be eliminated, however, the Ibiza City Council assures that in streets with more than two traffic lanes, one of them will be used to park, yes, upon payment. In Ignacio Wallis, for example, just in the section that goes from Avenida España to Bartolomé Rossello, will be created 20 seats for cars and 80 for motorcycles.
The Consistory also trusts in mitigating the parking problem with the approval of the underground parquin project in the Reina Sofía Park and with the achievement of which Autoritat Portuària wants to build in the Santa Eulalia Avenue.
The project
For years it was considered the possibility of converting these emblematic areas of the city into pedestrian ways in order to integrate them into the historical of the walls of Dalt Vila y to limit traffic and pollution in its surroundings. Finally, work is scheduled to begin this October.
Apart from pedestrianization, different changes will be made in each of the enclaves:
King's wand will undergo one of the most radical transformations. It will have a bike lane, other services and terraces on both sides of the walk. The center will be free, banks and part of the lighting and different tree species will be planted.
La Plaza del Parque will retain its structure, but it will change the street furniture, and the streets Jaume I and Comte de Rosselló (just behind the Plaza del Parque) will become another square that will be at the foot of the wall.
"The cars have won the game and we have to turn the score around to be able to walk around the city." This is just one of the problems that Rafa Ruíz, mayor of Ibiza, has perceived in the city and wants to solve starting with this great project.
