The traffic accidents on the roads of Ibiza have been happening daily for weeks and fleeing the place of the events abandoning the victims seems to be becoming a kind of macabre fashion
You get up, open the newspaper and there is one of the most repeated news of the summer in Ibiza: the fateful traffic accident and its victims.
It has always been this way, but the frequency with which this season is being published and, specifically, during these last weeks, is scary.
Accidents many of them free, since most are produced by factors that could easily be avoided such as the consumption of alcohol or narcotic substances. It seems that we have forgotten our responsibility at the wheel or even the importance of a life.
The fatal outcome of the road accident that suffered thirteen times world champion of motorcycling Ángel Nieto, the one of another motorcyclist who was seriously wounded last week at the junction of Can Navos de Santa Eulalia is added. Presumably, the driver of the SUV would have skipped a step and, to make matters worse, he tested positive for drugs.
As if it were not tragic enough, it seems to be becoming fashionable a phenomenon less embarrassing: to flee from the scene of the accident and leave the victims abandoned to their fate. Sorry, no more.
A few weeks ago a 34 motorist died after colliding with a car on the Sant Joan road. The culprit of the accident was given to the flight, but was stopped by the police days later.
Soon, the driver of a Fiat Punto that ran over a young woman in San Antonio also decided to leave her on the asphalt with cranial lesions that sent her directly to the ICU.
Days later, a rental car was abandoned in the avenue Juan Carlos I of Ibiza after crashing into another tourist. Two girls were injured and the cause of the coup fled.
The conditions of most of the island's roads are not the most favorable to avoid accidents. The road from Ibiza to Santa Eulalia has been shown on several occasions as an alarming black spot and motorists are the ones who usually get worse off.
The increase of the population in summer and, therefore, of vehicles that circulate in Ibiza together with the intake of drugs and alcohol by drivers do not help to alleviate the problem. The null respect that many show for the asphalt is fatal for the population. An irresponsibility to which we are all exposed, without exception.
And we ask ourselves, how can this slaughter on the roads be avoided? Raising Breathalyzer Controls? Improving the conditions of the tracks? With greater awareness? Appealing to the wisdom of the people? Unfortunately, it may not be enough to close your eyes and wait for the summer to come to an end.
