What to see in San Juan, Ibiza

San Juan is one of the few municipalities that has managed to keep its wealth intact. Wild beaches, culture, diving ... Nature in its purest form

If you have set out to discover the deepest Ibiza, which still retains a certain hippie and natural air as well as the most deeply rooted customs of the Ibizan culture, you are in the right place. San Juan is a tiny town of Ibiza in which time seems to have stopped. This is due, in part, to the fact that mass tourism has not yet reached this point.

The possibilities offered by this beautiful municipality are endless and almost all of them have a lot to do with the nature, gastronomy and culture. San Juan concentrates a large number of agrotourisms, those rural hotels where peace reigns above all else.

Knowing the center will not take you more than a few minutes. Sunday is the ideal day to do it since in the main square they install a beautiful market, both in summer and winter. The atmosphere in it is the most welcoming and lively. Taking something in one of the bars around is another fantastic idea, as well as discovering authentic jewels in the little shops that dot the area.

Family tourism and beaches

For the tranquility that characterizes it is one of the favorite municipalities of families. In particular, the areas of Portinatx y San Vicente Cove offer a more tourist oriented offer with children. Both have beaches with crystal clear waters with all kinds of services around.

If you want to explore more wild sands we advise you to choose Cala Xarraca, Xuclar Cove o s'Illot des Renclí. Small beaches with typical Mediterranean landscapes that you will not find too crowded.

And, arriving in San Juan, if there is something you can not miss, it is the visit to Benirras. It sure sounds to you and it is one of the most famous beaches in Ibiza, specifically for wonderful sunset and the popular batucadas of the Sundays, that congregate to hundreds of people.

San Juan cultural

There are several points in which to soak up the cultural wealth of Sant Joan. Some of the best known are the following:

-Cova de Can Marçà, San Miguel. Located inside a cliff and surrounded by a natural environment with some stunning sea views, the cave has more than 100.000 years old.

-Black of Balàfia, in the village of San Lorenzo. It is a group of seven rural houses grouped together, a representative sample of the architecture of Ibiza. It was declared Good of Cultural Interest (BIC) with the typology of historical set in 1996. At Es Amunts Interpretation Center, in the same town, will help you to make a route on foot so that you know it.

-Cueva de Es Culleram. In the vicinity of Cala San Vicente, in the middle of the mountain, we find this cave, a Phoenician sanctuary to the goddess Tanit, the main Carthaginian deity and one of the images most associated with Ibiza.

Ibizan gastronomy

San Juan is one of the places where you will find a greater number of restaurants dedicated to the gastronomy of Ibiza. If you are on the road to San Juan you will run into the restaurant Es Pins or with Balafia, two of the residents' favorites. If you are in the Cala San Vicente area you will see the famous Can Gat y San Vicente Beach Restaurant and, if you go to Portinatx, you can stop at s'Illot des Renclí and eat at the restaurant with the same name. Already in Benirràs the restaurant 2000 It is a great option to enjoy a paella on the beach.

Bullit de peix Ibiza The bullit de peix is one of the most traditional dishes of the gastronomy of Ibiza

In all of them you can taste first-hand the most authentic Ibizan flavors. Bullit de peix, arroz de matanzas, sofrit pagès, flaó, greixonera ... Venture out to try the island's specialties. You won't regret it!

Hiking and Scuba Diving

If you are a sports fan you are in the right municipality. In San Juan there are different cycle routes and for hikers with different levels of difficulty that, if they have something in common, is that they pass through beautiful natural spaces. As soon as you see yourself in the mountains, you will find yourself on the edge of a high cliff overlooking the sea.

If you have decided to take a dip in Portinatx, you can take the opportunity to take a short excursion to the Moscarter lighthouse. You will see its silhouette from the beach since it owns the highest tower of all Baleares.

Another experience that you should not miss here is to dive in its waters. Whether you are an amateur or an expert in this fascinating sport, you can carry it out in one of its diving centers. They perform from baptisms for beginners to professional courses. From here we recommend that you do not miss the opportunity to discover the secrets hidden in the Ibizan coast.
